Why is renter’s insurance important?

Renter’s insurance is important because it covers any of your furniture, electronics, books, or other belongings that get damaged or destroyed. It also covers you in the event that someone else gets injured in your apartment or someone’s personal property is damaged or destroyed and tries to sue you.

Do I need renter’s insurance

even if my landlord has insurance?

Yes, you should obtain renter’s insurance even if your landlord has insurance. Although your landlord almost certainly has property and liability insurance, your landlord’s insurance does not cover the items you keep in your apartment. It also does not protect you if a guest is injured and sues you for liability.

How much does renter’s insurance cost?

Renter’s insurance average price range is between $10 - $25 per month. Some companies go as low as $6 per month and other can go as high as $35 per month. Check with your current insurance company to see if they provide discounts for bundled packages (i.e. auto, fire, and/or renter’s). Also, if you are in college, check with your parent’s insurance company to see if you are covered while you are away at school.
